September 3rd, 2008 a list of things i like right now

1. zazen ecstasy - shiina ringo

very excited about this right now, so it gets number one spot, regardless of whether the rest of the items are actually ranked in numerical importance. the concert was originally broadcast on the internet in 2000, but thankfully released as a dvd this year as part of the shiina ringo 10th anniversary celebrations. because damn, streaming video was absolute crap back then. and this concert is everything i admire about her persona at the turn of the century - fierce, axe wielding, and never spare with emotions. please view the trailer for more proof.

2. what does this read like to you?

EPROZE
ZYGORD
ZICUE
STLESS
ARMTH
FOOCA
DEDUE
CUEVE
HYBAA
CIGNQ
LIGHCA

my thought was “a random collection of vowels and consonants”, but actually they’re men’s clothing brands at zozotown.

3. rain vs mustache

i can’t stop listening and watching the pvs for both olivia’s rain and kimura kaela’s mustache. olivia’s pv is psychedelic down to the 70s eye paint and kaleidoscopes. oh man do i love kaleidoscopes - the ones you shake in the tube, and the ones that are computer generated… what program did they use to create the ones projected in the pv? as for kaela, i wonder how she is popular as she has quirky ugly haircuts, and doesn’t mind wearing a strapless dress by the inner ribbons underneath her bust. even if she is only playing one note lines on her guitar, she has some pretty good songwriters working for her…

4. mintia mints

well, maybe you could substitute some fruity kind of chewing gum, or tic tacs for them, since i get into this bad habit of constantly chewing. but i became kind of addicted to these mints while i was in japan, since they come in flavours like aqua spark (sort of soda-y) and mango. even if they don’t have a name full of innuendo like frisk mint, i can’t give up these candy flavours. i’m on my last box too. boo hoo!

May 27th, 2008 happy 10th anniversary

ringo10th.com opened today. i think that makes it a tin anniversary…

ten years (27.05.1998) since the debut single of a girl with the stage name of shiina ringo.

in that time she was married, had a child, and divorced. she released four solo albums, and three with a band. she removed a mole from her face, and turned it into a premise for a concert! for better or worse, the precocious third finger raising teenager has turned into a kooky fashion plate. in the last few years, the solo act has given way to a band, tokyo jihen, but for all purposes is still dominated by ringo.

i haven’t shared all ten years with ringo, only the past six, marked by the lull after the double cd cover album, only to shock us with the musically complex karuki zamen kuri no hana (kzk) in 2003. i had only just begun to know the slip and tiara wearing rocker of her youth when a kimono wearing persona appeared with jazz rhythms and traditional instruments layered one over the other.

i live somewhat vicariously through ringo. i send myself hoarse singing her high pitched scratchy songs at karaoke. i bought a vivienne westwood knuckle ring, which is sort of a shorter version of her armour ring and wear it everyday. i try and learn a cover to play in my band. my band is named after her. kzk raised my expectations forever of what music should be, and her debut album still moves me to action.

i don’t know what the future ten years might hold, though i know my expectations are unfair. forgive me, because her music makes me think this way!

May 1st, 2008 just can’t figure her out

i hadn’t really come across any female japanese comedians that i liked, until i encountered edo harumi (”guuuuu!“), and torii miyuki. both of them are so hot right now, though i can’t see edo’s 80s looking nice/crazy woman schtick lasting as long as one of her “guuuu” wordplay games.

torii miyuki, however, has various guises, including the following:

l to r: standard crazy with googly eyes; bad gothic lolita angel, often with wings; gravure(!?!); normal & darkish

i was going to show you a video that had her singing an old song, jumping up and down, but youtube admin have deleted it. but in it, her switch from sweet to manic in a second had me thinking of shiina ringo and togawa jun and all the crazy things that is usually associated with. people on nicovideo also agree, with someone commenting “togawa jun x shiina ringo /2 = torii miyuki”

wait a moment… in the video below she actually says, ‘i want to be like togawa jun!’

and then carries on mussing up her hair and yelling in good fashion…

even if it’s not a physical resemblance, it’s the awkwardness and general weirdness. i can’t figure out where miyuki the comedian starts and miyuki the real person finishes, though they probably both speak mighty weird.

everyone seems to think she is a beauty though, with tv programs & jj magazine already having made her over to their standards:

i like the way she is, with her crazy persona, ratty hair and… a huge collection of vivienne westwood? anyway, she probably deserves buying them when the content of her skits includes a pregnant woman talking to her unborn child and but then loses the child because of domestic violence; and imagining sneaking into mayumi ono’s wedding (she lost an “image girl” contest to her in 2001) to cut open her belly and steal the baby, only that more things keep coming out of mayumi’s belly…

but if you hunt yahoo auctions, you might see a dvd entitled “gravure! - torii miyuki” from 2005 - last one sold was 51000 yen. that’s how much one will pay for a rare dvd of her lying on the couch in a bikini, taking a shower still in a bikini, and look vaguely interested floating around the house in a kimono. but why did she make the dvd? maybe times were hard in 05?

to make up, torii recently released a dvd called happy monday, and the set looks very much akin to a horror movie, the perfect backdrop to her crazy ladies.
