October 28th, 2008 final!
thought i’d just point out that the dvds for hana yori dango final are coming out, and they have… NO ENGLISH SUBS.
stina and i sat through the whole movie while we were in nagoya, because i was feeling crook and we were both generally hot and tired. a bit of an experience, with all the girls and women filling the cinema (the second highest grossing film in japan for 2008). and lining up for the toilet afterwards.

somehow we managed to watch the whole thing without understanding a lot of it (although we had both watched the tv series), and maybe only nodding off about once in the middle.
though the movie does have some of the most ridiculous scenes, especially when stranded on the island:

the limited edition comes in a funny briefcase type thing, with oodles of dvd extras, and postcards, but I NEED SUBS to justify this.

maybe the hong kong edition will have them, whenever that’s released.
October 26th, 2008 new toy!
for the lack of a better title. i finally picked up a toy piano - a schoenhut my first toy piano II. recommended for ages three and up, so at least i fit into that age category. it does only have two octaves though, so i’m trying not to think of ways of obtaining a baby toy grand.

they only had one left, so i took red with no reservations, white and pink is available too, but i’d probably pass on the pink. it does sound honky tonk, as the shopgirl said, but there’s something i like about the sound too.
i can’t remember mozart’s version of twinkle, twinkle so here is an approximation.
i have plans for this little red baby!
brought to you by cat and girl:

i have no idea and no context for pbr, but my guess is this. watching bull riding must mean you’re going down. but is that what nouveau pauvre means? it’s opposite, nouveau riche, has plenty of precedence, otherwise known as your relatives who are moneybags but don’t look as if they have spent well and are forever having yelled conversations.
the most official looking thing for nouveau pauvre is a french wikipedia entry. in all its sociological analytical glory, it defines it as being “a term that refers to a class of people vulnerable as a result of economic, technological and social changes taking place in society”. it refers to the impermanence of employment, relationships and isolation in the social fabric.
but the other, more casual usage? people trying to hide their wealthy backgrounds? students, artists, musicians and writers attempting to be virtuously poor in order to create with morals, substance and a degree of smugness?
maybe i’m trying to read too much into girl’s utterance, or maybe nouveau pauvre is the end all punchline in itself. confused?
