May 6th, 2008 inanimate objects

my memories of long car trips include the wind beating upon my face, and white rabbit lollies. chewy and milky flavoured, and for some reason with a wrapping of rice paper around the candy itself. i gave one to my friend’s son the other day, and even when i told him that he could eat the rice paper, he insisted ‘no!’ and continued picking it off onto the floor.

for a long time i couldn’t eat the white rabbits, simply because i had my childhood fill of them, also they came to be associated with that uncomfortable feeling of sitting in the backseat of a car for far too long, wanting to be sick, but not actually being able to, and waiting for the burps instead. but i’m not a kid anymore, right?

as made famous by oz_lolitas, australian lolitas, and the like, i recently bought myself a dangerfield pvc heart bag. i hate going down to “the basement” of myer, as it is quite rag tag, but i will probably be back to sneak pictures of the toilet roll holder dolls and plastic flowers in their displays.

but the bag is similar to heart shaped bags made by japanese lolita brands, and has some of the alice and card deck mystique about it due to the motif, but costs just over A$30. brand bags are significantly more expensive with shipping added, but nicer. this thing is just cheap and cheerful. and this thing is also big enough to carry one of my equally big old cameras inside, plus wallet, keys, mobile, ipod, diary, cardigan, film…

i mean, a messenger bag slung over one shoulder kinda spoils the image of lolita i am trying to create, although i can fit two cameras into that one.

LOLZ all ’round regarding rice paper. My (Japanese) boss makes frequent trips to Las Vegas Chinatown and brings back these great spicy ginger candies, wrapped with rice paper under the “normal” wrapper. He loves to give them to visitors in the office to see how “white” they are: If they try to remove the rice paper, they are whitewhitewhite.

A slung messenger back is not quite the thing for the gothic lolita style, is it? I think this style (and fashion in general) demands a bit of sacrifice of comfort, so leave the cardigan at home. Try sewing secret pockets in the puffy bits of dresses for the iPod & mobile. If your mobile is bluetooth you could secret that in a pocket and have a little earpiece… um…

haha, i never thought of that as a test of whiteness. though spicy ginger may even take a bit of getting used to on my half…

comfort isn’t too much of a problem with gothic lolita, i think money is a bigger one! just gotta get some basics and keep it under control, uh…

gahhh! So that’s where dangerfield is in perth - in MYER? I was looking for ages, though I suppose because it’s not the full store they wont have what I was looking for (the err, toddler Sonic Youth t-shirt). I never venture downstairs there, it’s like this invisible shield that repels me - I never even think to go down there. :/

you can go with me! i hadn’t been downstairs for ages until the new children’s library assistant dragged me there. there’s a ton of t-shirts there (including one that says ‘libraries are great mate’) but i’m not sure about kids sizes.

    good/interesting photo ops though, i swear…
