June 11th, 2007 t-shirt mania
i have a thing for t-shirts. but as it is unavoidable that i am heading towards thirty (a few more years bozo), sometimes i think that i should get some real clothes. taking all these pictures made me realise how many damn t-shirts i have, but they tend to be music related or else just plain. i never really liked character tees or things with useless scribble on them.
i end up wearing these under jackets and cardigans when it gets colder, much like now. see, i have no style secrets.

a souvenir from hong kong, to celebrate actually being able to find the panic shop whilst running around mongkok like a proverbial chicken without a head. i love hong kong and i love harbour records. i would have liked to pick up the “gigi leung is dead” tee but i had run out of money by that stage of my trip.

this one never fails to perplex, but the band’s name really is slumber party and not some secret veiled message about girls. from the cover of their album psychedlicate, girls meets velvet underground meets pop.

japanese one-man band apartment. bought it along with his album from finderpop. 8 and 4 tracks are an important part of his sound, which can be summed up as crazy 60s melodies.

a couple of baseball tees from ebay - puffy! i really like the earlier puffy music, especially those written by okuda tamio. i also liked their casual look back then, which may or may not be the source of my t-shirt mania. baseball tees are good for inbetween weather too…

a hairdresser (who no longer cuts my hair) got the hair bleach all over my elephant6 t-shirt. goddamn! maybe if i get out a purple marker…

ah sloan, my original love. the band that got me into the back catalog of music. the sloanx3 tee is so worn out, i think i’ve had it for six years or more. the one on the right is for their latest album, never hear the end of it. i have a third (pink) t-shirt, but it’s drying on the washing line as we speak.

i admit earlier on, i had to get the guts to wear this one. people really do stare at your chest trying to read it (and then most people actually fail to get the point, unfortunately). sleater-kinney’s corin tucker designed this one - sort of a ‘get you back’ for “show us your tits”. and i suppose appropriate for guitar playing women as well.

this is another well worn tee. i quite like the clever design of this, even though the mooney suzuki have evolved into a major label band that sucks. they were better when they looked beatnik and played hard and fast.

and lastly - well not really a band as such, but black stones from manga nana. i am not manga otaku.
and in the endless pursuit of tees, i’m really hoping to get the hoff dylan ones somehow, since the band is my current favourite musical thing to analyse. time to save up some money…

Harbour Records is amazing! I ended up buying six of their CDs while I was in Hong Kong.

haha, i feel silly asking this but, do you know what size that harbour records tee is? i was about to get one for myself through their online store and then remembered the last time i got a shirt from china, the size was definitely not what i expected -_-
anyway, if this makes any bit of sense, yours ‘looks’ like the right size and so i’m hoping you could let me know.
oh, and i like your blog too

hey joe, it’s an XS. it’s just the right fit for me (i’m five nine and all) but if you’re worried about shoulder width and stuff maybe go next size up.
you seem to like my little airport as well
hi doretta - i agree! hopefully the next time i go to hong kong i can find their other (bigger) store. have you been to white noise records?

thanks for writing back.
an Xtra-small though? day-ammm! well it looks good on you and i do like tighter shirts, but all that aside, i’m 3 inches taller than you, and a MANLY MAN of course (not quite) so i might even go up to a medium! yikes!
well anyway, you and your site are actually rather fascinating so i think i will come back to visit. and eventually, i’ll most likely be letting you know just how poorly my new shirts fit, because i’m pretty much guessing about sizes here. haha but maybe i’ll get lucky and will look just as cool as you! you never know.
take care

I haven’t been to White Noise Records. I stopped by Monitor Records and Zoo Records. Well, if I move there, I’ll have to hit White Noise.
