February 22nd, 2007 yasutaka nakata is human genius

being the producer/writer/art designer/director/conceptualist for artists such as coltemonihka, nagisa cosmetic, copter4016882, perfume and his main project, capsule. favourite words (from a quick scan of song titles): cosmetic, girl, cutie, sky, starry.

but i have a small thing to pick. doesn’t capsule’s latest release, sugarless girl (below), sound like the more adult and slowed down version of perfume’s chocolate disco (above)? maybe it’s not true, though i did try and play them side by side to figure it out. maybe it’s just a reflection of his current preoccupations (another being guitar sound in his dance tracks and making the girls sing as straight as possible for his vocoder).

either ways, i love the concept of both videos, even if chocolate disco may give you pikachu inspired fit.

February 20th, 2007 i love cny

went out for dinner and ended up seeing/steering myself in the
direction of three lion dances. i never tire of them, as long as the
troupe is GOOD, and not shitty and weak and with drumming all over the
place. more noise and family/friends = chinese new year.

February 20th, 2007 thug thugga chug chugga

polvo.jpg

kinda young. a long time ago.

from communications minor/english major:

2) Polvo Today’s Active Lifestyles - The opening track on Exploded Drawing is probably better because it’s got the, “weeew nooo SKING neeeeewdanananana (pause) SKING BWOOP” repetition going for it. The opening track on this one, “Thermal Treasure,” is more like “da da da WEEEOOOW” and then it gets all “thug thugga chug chugga” before shooting off into left field. I just love the way Ash Bowie can constantly stop on a dime and then totally change a song’s entire direction with his quirky guitar skills. Speaking of which, I think Ash Bowie is hands down the greatest name in the history of rock music. Ever since Polvo was introduced to me, I’ve been dreaming of the day I can buy a pet and name it Ash Bowie, or buy two pets, and call one Ash and one Bowie!

looks like he agrees with me. i don’t remember where i mentioned it before, since i have an estimated 10000 different blogs at some time or another, but i think i said something like “ash bowie is the best name ever, since for me it combines ash naylor and david bowie” (naylor being a big fan of bowie). hmmm… i think i gotta take up that pet idea…

after helium broke up and he released his solo libraness album, the wikipedia entry had something like ‘his whereabouts are unknown’. so i was thinking, heck, it’s not like he would go nuts and become a hermit somewhere, and surely he’s not dead… is he? lucky internet researching brings me to a page on fan modine, in which he plays occasional guitar, and there’s even a promo picture with him staring at the ground and whatnot, proving his existence. because it’s horrible to think that even one of your favourite musicians has dropped off the face of the internet? anyway, i changed that wiki entry
