June 14th, 2006 think about it

i sometimes think asian women, more specifically young chinese girls originally from south east asia, are my hardest judges. they stare at me when i enter the chinese grocery store in doc martens and a puffy skirt. they're the only ones i hear questioning if i'm a boy or a girl when i wear jeans and a hoodie or a men's jacket and clark's boots. it's not drag. i just feel like a jay ferguson (r) sometimes.

but there is no way in hell i would like to look like this, namely taiwanese singer and "it" girl jolin tsai, whom i would presume to represent the preferred form of femininity amongst young chinese girls (small, "sexy", very thin, big eyed, girlish).

i would sooner stick my head in a vat of boiling oil than adopt such typical modes of gender. anyway.

somewhat worried about the two different featured modes of collecting in cutie magazine:

february 2001 - "trendy stickers"
june 2006 - "vivienne westwood"

how might a person like, say marxy, explain this? are japanese teenagers more obsessed with brand names than ever? (the core readers of cutie are in high school) how do they even afford this stuff? the japanese economy might be picking up, but surely the students and part-timers can't afford all these things.

i prefer more innocent pursuits like collecting stickers, although hypocrite me is thinking of blowing my savings on a vw armour ring. what does it mean anyway? that i have an expensive rock heart? that i oggle shiina ringo's fingers too much?

good questions to ponder while preferring to ignore shitty library patrons, including that stupid old man who won't leave me alone…

(catching up) btw - that girl up there ain’t the kind of girly I was talking about for the photo shoot we’ll be doing - it’s more our type of taking our collections and obsessions to the limit. In pastels… eating cupcakes…

eh? of course not. i was thinking more of the stuff you find in japanese high fashion magazines, not this kind of “what boys like” feminine, or “i’m a rich housewife”. something like that.
